Line Movement
Full game line opened at UNC -1.5 which drew quite a bit of initial steam and triggered a mid-week move to UNC -2.5. The line has shifted a bit back and forth but has settled around the UNC -2.5 mark.
Analysis
The Numbers: The early-season numbers scream βheavyweights,β but Kansasβ opener pops off the page: elite shotmaking (65.5% eFG) and almost no turnovers, producing a sky-high 145.8 ORtg. UNC looked very good too, doubling Central Arkansas on the glass chances (37.5% OREB rate) and cruising behind a 50.8% FG night.
For the matchup, our possession model mashes those single-game efficiencies together with a UNC home-court bump. Even with that +3 per-100 edge to the Heels, the projection still leans Kansas by ~7β8 at ~70 possessions (82β75 type game). The hinge factors: can KUβs guards protect the ball anywhere close to that first-game standard, and can UNCβs offensive glass (12 OREBs in the opener) tilt extra possessions?
The model is based on single game efficiencies, which are always noisy, so we have to bump our confidence level down on this. However, I’m looking for Kansas to show that those first-game inputs, while volatile, are justifiable moving forward.
